Compact Disc (CD) is a molded plastic disc containing digital data that is scanned by a laser beam for the reproduction of recorded sound or other information. There are many different types of CD such as CD-ROM (Compact Disc-Read Only Memory), CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable), CD-RW (Compact Disc-Rewritable) and others.
CD-R is a compact disc on which you can write only once & thereafter is read-only memory.
CD-ROM is a compact disc that is used with a computer (rather than with an audio system). A large amount of digital information can be stored & accessed, but it cannot be altered by the user.
CD-RW is a rewritable version of CD-ROM. Users can write about 650 megabytes of data to CD-RW media an unlimited number of times.
Overall, CD-R is considered a better technology for archival purposes as data cannot be accidentally modified or tampered with & encourage better archival practices.
